"accra/paid" segmented c.d.s. in red
1873 (27 Feb.) envelope registered to Wolverhampton, showing red crayon "1/- / 4 / 1/4" (indicating 1/- for postage with 4d. registration fee), "accra/ b/ paid" c.d.s., manuscript "Registered", "registered/ liverpool" c.d.s. (25.3) and "paid/ liverpool/ ship" tombstone d.s. (25.3) with Birmingham and Wolverhampton arrival c.d.s. (both 26.3) on reverse. Edge faults including tape stains, nevertheless an extremely rare cover, the earliest recorded registered mail from Accra, pre-dating the arrival of 'Registered' handstamps. Photo.
