Early Letters and Handstamps
1733 (3 Oct.) entire letter to "the African House, Leadenhall Street, London", apparently written in August, with date changed to October (presumably on day of despatch), endorsed "Cape Palmas" (Liberia) inside, in a different hand, showing on reverse London Bishopmark (3.3), with indistinct manuscript charge mark, likely to be "3" or "4" for onward delivery to London. An extraordinary survival of utmost importance, being the earliest recorded cover from the Gold Coast. Photo
