Cape of Good Hope
1865 (28 Oct.) large wrapper written in the distinctive hand of Dr. David Livingstone from Bombay to Sir Thomas Maclear at the Royal Observatory in Cape Town, marked " On Her Majestys Service" and "Observation Book from Dr. Livingstone" at foot, "R.&Co." (Remington & Co., Bombay), red wax seal, despatch and Port Elizabeth (7.12) datestamps on reverse with a further Port Elizabeth datestamp on face. A fine item of mail sent by this most famous of explorers. Photo

Note: David Livingstone was in Bombay from September 1865 until January 1866 where he raised funds and prepared for his forthcoming expedition to Africa, and was received by the Governor, Sir Bartle Frere. This was to be his last expedition - he died in 1873 and his body was returned to England where he is buried in Westminster Abbey
