Postal History
1841 (30 April) entire letter to Bombay, endorsed "Paid 1/-" and with fine red "d/paid"datestamp and a superb strike in red of the framed "via falmouth"; fine. A tremendous rarity. This rare routing mark, previously only recorded in black was allocated to the Foreign Branch Office of the G.P.O. for mail bagged in London, addressed to Southern Europe, the Mediterranean and India, which was to travel by Falmouth packet boat, rather than overland via France. Remarkably few examples of this handstamp have been recorded in black. This is the only recorded example struck in red. Photo
