Postal History
1859 (5 Aug.) stampless entire letter to Baltimore, "Per Steamer from Liverpool, 6 Aug" bearing a good strike of "houses of parliament/s.w." c.d.s. code "2" with "19/cents" accountancy handstamp in black and "n.york br. pkt./24" c.d.s. (18.8), charged 24c., and with a further Houses of Parliament c.d.s. on the reverse. The letter sent by William Scholefield on his late father's business. A very desirable cover which is believed to be the only example of this c.d.s. on overseas mail from the Houses of Parliament. Photo

William Scholefield (1809-1867) was a British businessman and Liberal politician. He was a leading figure in the politics of the rapidly growing industrial town of Birmingham in the mid-nineteenth century. In July 1844 Joshua Scholefield died (William's father), causing a vacancy in the parliamentary representation of the borough. William contested the resulting by-election, but was defeated by the Conservative candidate Richard Spooner. Three years later a general election was called, and Scholefield was returned along with the sitting Radical MP, George Frederick Muntz. He retained the seat until his death
