Postal History
1851 (6 Jan.) entire letter from Richard Greetham (apparently on the run and in hiding on the Isle of Man) at Castletown, addressed to himself at Carlisle but with cryptic addition "for SW" to the address, clearly intended for his wife. The letter begins "Dear Sarah" and tells of his solitude, clearly homesick and missing his children, obviously fearing for his safety he has chosen his hiding place carefully "if it was Summer I could fish for Salmon, Trout and Eels without moving .... and nobody can come in or out of the farm without me seeing them" franked by 1841-53 1d., SD, most likely having been re-used, partly affixed with sealing wax and then sewn onto the entire with needle and thread, "407" barred oval cancellations and on reverse with green Douglas and blue Castletown datestamps; fine. An interesting and full of character entire. Photo
