Postal History
1709 (5-6 Dec.) "The London Gazette", including an article regarding the illegal "Foot Post" of Charles Povey (whose Half-Penny carriage handstamp is the rarest of all postmarks, with only one example recorded, held in the Public Records Office).
Although the Post Office succeeded in suppressing Povey's Private Foot Post in London, which was modelled on Dockwra's Penny Post of nearly 30 years previously, the idea of a Bell Ringer was copied by the Post Office and continued into the nineteenth Century. Fine and an exceptionally rare and important article regarding Povey. Photo
