A rare Payment Warrant signed by Charles II: a manuscript instruction to Sir Stephen Fox, Paymaster General of Land Forces in England, for payment of £188 1s 4d to Sir Thomas Slingsby being 2 months pay for the Garrison of Scarborough, 1671, signed Charles R at top, Matthew Lock signs at bottom right, Sir Thomas Slingsby also signs on the inner page having received the funds also in 1671, a little toned but VF and very rare.

Signatures of Charles II are rare, especially on Payment Warrants. The amount here was for pay for the troops stationed at Scarborough Castle, to defend against Dutch invasion. Charles II was at this time in financial difficulty, payments were generally late and things got so bad that a stop on the Exchequer was declared in 1672. The decline of Scarborough Castle followed and the Dutch took control during the revolution of 1688.
Sir Thomas Slingsby, 2nd Baronet (1636 - 1688), High Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1660, MP for Yorkshire in 1670, also representing Knaresborough and Scarborough. Sir Thomas' father was executed in 1658 for his Royalist tendencies and the family estates confiscated. The title and estates were restored with Charles II in 1660.
