Die Gründung der Bahn erfolgte auf Initiative des Industriellen Adolf Guyer-Zeller. Die Bauarbeiten begannen 1896. Die Endstation Jungfraujoch konnte ab 1912 als höchstgelegener Bahnhof Europas erreicht werden.
