Giuseppe Lazzaro Morpurgo (1759-1835) founded this insurance company in 1831 in the Austro-Italian Town of Trieste with a capital of two million Florin, divided into 2000 shares. Generali soon opend offices throughout whole of Italy and the Austrian Empire. In 1857, its shares traded for the first time at the Trieste stock exchange. Today Generali Group is the largest insurance company in Italy and one of the largest in Europe.
