(x) German Athenæum, Limited, £5 share, London, 1908, #369, rare, EF

The German Athenaeum was a German Club for cultural exchange in London. The club was established in 1869 by Gottfried Kinkel (1815-1882). In 1849, Kinkel was one of the main actors in the liberal revolution at the Siegburger Zeughaussturm and during the uprising in Baden-Palatine. In 1850, he escaped prison and together with his friend, Carl Schurz, he fled the country for London. His Athenaeum regularly organized presentations, concerts and exhibitions. Its localities were in 93 Mortimer Street and later in 19 Stratford Place. The share is issued to Maurice George Bauer (1875-1948) a chemical and mineral merchant in London, originating from Hamburg.
