Deutsche Luftschiffahrts-AG (short DELAG), the world's first passenger airline was founded 1909 by the initiative of Alfred Colsmann, friend of and CEO for Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin "Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH". It managed all commercial operations of the Zeppelins and had a total capital of 3 Mio. Mark. Until World War I, DELAG's fleet of six Zeppelin Airships had transported 34,028 passengers on 1,588 commercial flights. During WWI, the German army requisitioned all of the company's airships. In 1928, DELAG started the successful operation of the famous LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin, which made regular, nonstop, transatlantic flights from Germany to New York and Rio. Under Reichsminister Göring the company was forced to be liquidated and the airships had to be handed over to the newly formed DZR. In 1937 the DZR airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire at Lakehurst, New York.
