This first Wiener Messe (Trade Fair of Vienna) was opened in September 1921. Its original purpose was to lead Austria out of the economic isolation after the WWI. The biggest part of the Messe was the construction on the site of the former Wiener Weltausstellung of 1873 at the Prater with the Rotunde as the main attraction (see Rotunde in the underprint). The Vienna trade fair was organised twice a year (Frühjahrsmesse, Herbstmesse). In 1937, the Rotunde burned down and after the "Anschluss" the Messe lost its importance. Today Messe Wien is again the biggest trade fair in Austria.
