The Österreichische Credit-Anstalt für Handel und Gewerbe was founded 1855 by Anselm Salomon Freiherr von Rothschild. For many years, it was the leading bank in the empire. In 1926, it took over the Anglo-Austrian Bank and in 1929, was forced to take over the Boden-Credit-Anstalt. In 1934, it ran into problems itself and merged with the Wiener Bankverein into the "Österreichische Creditanstalt - Wiener Bankverein". In 1938, the main owner, Louis Nathaniel von Rothschild, was forced to hand over ownership of this bank and to emigrate. Today Bank Austria Creditanstalt.
