The Allgemeine Österreichische Boden-Credit-Anstalt was founded in 1863. It was one of the most prestigious banking institutes and had many members of the Habsburg family and nobility as clients. At the turn of the century, business practices of the "Boden" became more aggressive and riskier. One of the big debitors was the famous Steyr-Werke. In 1929, the bank informed the Chancellor Johannes Schober about the massive problems of the bank. Schober immediately forced Louis Nathaniel von Rothschild and his Creditanstalt to take over the Boden-Credit-Anstalt for an eighth of the last trade share price. The "Boden" was formally saved. However, soon the Credit-Anstalt ran into big problems itself.
