The company was founded in 1890 to build and operate a railway between Friedberg and Hartberg in Steiermark (28 km) and the 59 km extension to Neudau. Together with the Aspang railway, it formed a connection between Vienna and the Steiermark, independent of the Südbahn. Shares and Priority Shares were primarily in the possession of the State and the Land.
