John C. Fremont: Southern Trans-Continental Railroad Co. - Texas Devision, $1000, Promise to repay with 5 acres of agricultural land, 1868, #142, signed on verso, black, some staining at bottom edge, very fine.

John Charles Fremont (1813-1890) had a turbulent carrier as American military officer, explorer and politician. During the Mexican-American War, he was major in the U.S. Army, took control of California and proclaimed himself military Governor of California. Later he was the First presidential candidate of the new antislavery Republican Party in 1856. During the American Civil War, he was given command of Department of the West by President Abraham Lincoln but was soon relieved of his command for insubordination. Later he served as fifth Territorial Governor of Arizona.
