Benjamin Brewster (1828-1897) made his fortune in 1849 in the California Gold Rush, establishing a general mercantile store in San Francisco. Later he financed several railways and became involved with John D. Rockefeller in organizing the Standard Oil Company. He served as a trustee for the Standard Oil Trust
