The cooperative for road transport was founded in Alessandria, Piemonte, in 1936. As this was the year in which Fascist Italy invaded Ethiopia, it might be the reason for the design being a little patriotic. The name was relating to Santorre de Santarosa (1783-1825), an Italian aristocrat and military adventurer, who died while fighting for the independence of Greece.
