1868 (16 Jan.) Augustine Heard Printed Circular to Connecticut bearing 1862-66 2c. black tied by the rare segmented cork cancellation in blue and showing a good strike of the very rare "u.s. consulate general p.o.d./shanghai" c.d.s. also in blue. Only two examples of this postmark have been recorded, both used on the same date.
The adhesive has been affixed between the wrapper and the printed sheet, but has only suffered minor creasing. The wrapper is exceptionally fresh and fine. A rare and highly desirable printed paper rate cover.
The United States Post Office opened on 10th June 1867 from the Consulate rooms at 12 Chinkiang Road in Shanghai. Early mail from this offices was cancelled by modified consular datestamps until the new cancelling devices were received.
The second cover is addressed to New York via San Francisco, bearing 10c. green tied by the segmented cork obliterator in blue with a part strike of the the Consulate General c.d.s. alongside. From the Drucker Family collection, February 2003
