Auction: 16011 - Banknotes, Bonds and Share Certificates and Coins of China and Hong Kong
Lot: 1208

The HongKong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, complete set of archival photographic proof consisting of $5, $10, $100, $500 and $1000, unissued designs, all with handstamp showing 'DLR Studio: Photographed XX XX 1956', the designs are mainly floral in nature, apart from the $1000 which shows an aerial view of Hong Kong Island, rather similar to the Mercantile Bank $100 issues, the interesting points in this group is that: 1 - HSBC was ready to reduce the size of its banknotes from the mid 1950's; it was finally done in 1959, 2 - a $1000 denomination was contemplated but it was not until 1977 that the first $1000 was issued, 3 - although the design for the $1000 was not issued, it was finally used on the Mercantile Bank $100 from 1964 to 1973, 4 - the obverse and reverse designs for the $5 to the $500 was never used.
A fascinating group of photos, in very choice condition and dated officially, unique (5 pairs).
