The Inventor of the Postage Stamp. The Great Debate Between the Sons of Rowland Hill and James Chalmers
1879 (10 Dec.) Chalmers replies to Hill in a seven page letter with "10 Rosehill Road, Wandsworth S.W.", he was far from happy with Hill's reply. He was sure that the adhesive stamp mentioned in the 9th. report was an afterthought and that more emphasis was given to stamped covers. In this assumption he was correct, as Rowland Hill, at that stage expected Mulready letter sheets and envelopes to be substantially more popular with the general public. Chalmers goes on to demand a public contradiction of so glaring a misstatement of the facts and finishes with "it is not in this way that you will desire to maintain a claim to the merit of the adhesive stamp".
