Lot: 279
(x) Madagascar, Kingdom, Order of Ranavalona III, 3rd Type, Knight's breast Badge, by Chobillon, Paris, 68mm including crown suspension x 42mm, silver-gilt and enamel, maker's cartouche to reverse, minor enamel crack to central medallion, otherwise good very fine and rare, with rosette on riband
The Order of Ranavalona III was estalished in 1896 in Madagascar in honour of her monarch, although the nation had been annexed to France, 1.1.1896. Its riband is distinctive and unusual in the fact that it is white with a red canton. The order, like its monarch was abolished, 28.2.1897, with the Queen being exiled from the island and taken to Réunion Island. She was ordered to leave her Palace at 1.30am, being carried through the streets by palanquin and with an escort of approximately seven hundred porters and escorts. Reports suggest the onward carriage by sea was not particularily to the liking of the Queen, who decided to drink a large amount of rum to pass the time.
