(x) Hawaii, Kingdom, Royal Order of Kalakaua I, Commander's neck Badge, 84mm including crown suspension x 54mm, gold and enamel, one arch to crown bent and lacking support from base of crown, minor white enamel loss, good very fine and rare, with neck riband
The Royal Order of Kalakaua was instituted to commemorate the accession of King Kalakaua I, 12.2.1874. Organised into four classes, the Order was bestowed a total of 254 times between its introduction, 28.9.1875 and 1893. At this later date the Order became obsolete with the overthrow of Queen Lili'uokalani, before Hawaii was finally annexed by the United States of America in 1898.
The Commander class was limited to 50 living recipients at any one time, each receiving an annuity of $100, with a penalty of $20 should the recipient fail to attend or fail to write a reason for non-attendance the annual Grand Council meeting. In total, this class of the Order was bestowed 95 times.
