D.C.M. London Gazette 3.9.1918 56595 Sergeant J. Tracey, Royal Field Artillery (Epsom)
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When his battery was being heavily shelled by gas and high explosives, and a gas shell wounded three of his detachment, this N.C.O., though gassed himself, stayed at his gun and fired it until the order to cease fire was given. Two days later, when enemy shelling had wounded nearly all his detachment, he carried on with one gunner at his gun until it was knocked out by a direct hit. He then carried on with another gun until all ammunition was expended. He showed splendid grit and determination.'
