11179 Group Captain Walter William Deane was born at Rotherhithe, Surrey, 1896. He served with the Royal Field Artillery as Corporal with the Regimental number '1728' during the Great War on the Western Front from 6.3.1916, commissioned Second Lieutenant, 20.10.1917. relinquished commission as Lieutenant, 1.4.1920.
A charming copied letter, in the hand of Deane and dated 30.3.1919, dispatched to the War Office provides more insight to his service 'Sir, I have the honour to request your reconsideration of my claim for wound gratuity under Para 345 Section X of Pay Warrant. I forwarded my application months ago and told my case was under consideration. Possibly my application was mislaid and your reply in the negative was no doubt due to your not having the facts before you. I was wounded by shell fire in my right shoulder, which has left my shoulder weaker and the movement limited considerably. If my application sent in at first has been lost I will send a duplicate copy. Trusting you will favourably reconsider your decision. I have the honour to be, Sir, Your Obedient Servant.'
Later commissioned into the newly formed Royal Air Force, Flying Office, 3.5.1921, promoted Flight Lieutenant, 3.1.1928, Squadron Leader, 31.3.1936, Wing Commander, 12.3.1940.
