The Four Year and Six Year Medals replaced the earlier 'Excelsior' and 'Watch and Be Sober' Bars to the Three Year and Five Year Medals in 1893, because in the days of the short service enlistments these medals might be the last that many members would receive, and "would be more appreciated than a bar."
