Lot: 381

Celtic, Trinovantes and Catuvellauni, Cunobelin, (c.10-40 AD), gold Quarter Stater, 1.36g, 'Classic Bow' type, garnished corn ear with central stalk flanked by ca mv, [pelleted outer circle], rev. Romanized horse right, tied bow motif above, cvno on groundline below (ABC 2825; VA-; S.-), oval flan with irregular areas, reverse off-struck, however, maintaining a very high level of detail for a flan of this size, a truly high relief piece, extremely fine, excessively rare

provenance
Bt. Vosper, May 2004

This reverse die was cut by the same hand as for ABC 2801. A unique departure from the styles usually associated with Cunobelin's gold coinage, these issues are much more Roman in style and give a real sense of musculature to the horse.
