Note: On 23rd February 1894 Grien's Independent Theatre Society produced Zola's 'Heirs of Rabourdin' in London. This production, acknowledged as the worst the Society produced, met with a savage review in the Athenaeum. Zola's note appears to be an acknowledgement of the poor reception of his piece
