Forming and En Route
1899 (5 Nov.) envelope (complete with long letter) from L.D. Street of "D" Company to his mother in Ottawa, part of the unscheduled transfer of mail at sea to S.S. Rangatira, showing manuscript "6" tax mark and, on reverse, London (29.11) and Ottawa (7 Dec.) c.d.s.; the contents include "expect to post at Cape Verde Island. Ship far too small for troops". Also 14 October letter from Street advising his mother that he had joined the contingent and 25th. October letter from Ottawa Barracks with details of garrison life. Photo

Note: The S.S. "Sardinian" proceeded directly to Cape Town. Within sight of St. Vincent, Cape Verde Islands, two pillow slips of mail were transferred in mid ocean on 15 November
