1887 (12 Apr.) envelope (210x85mm.) registered from Sandakan to Washington, USA bearing 1886 perf 14 2c. brown and 10c. blue pair, both cancelled by 14 bar oval, showing "sandakan" c.d.s. in red at top left, framed "registered no" h.s. (Type R1; earliest recorded date), Registered London transit d.s. (10.6) and, on reverse, New York (19.6) and arrival (20.6) datestamps; the envelope a little soiled and with heavy central vertical crease. A rare franking illustrating the 14c. per half ounce and 8c. registration fee introduced on 1 November 1886, for closed mail via Singapore to or through the United Kingdom, to a Postal Union country, which did not require the use of Straits Settlements stamps.
