Field Marshal Montgomery
1967 (20 October), 25th Reunion of of the Battle of Alamein; a two page, handwritten "Message from the Army Commander" signed at the end, "Montgomery of Alamein, F.M.". These notes were prepared for the meeting at the Royal Festival Hall, London; he expressed concern that the British had lost their fighting spirit and was now confronting a very dangerous for, the weakness from within. He quotes the words read out when the Africa Star was fastened to the Union Jack and concludes, " ... a young schoolboy stood facing the Union Flag, and on behalf of his own generation affirmed their resolve to carry on the Spirit now handed to them. It was all very moving and brought tears to the eyes of Sir Winston Churchill who was sitting next to me." Signed and dated at foot.
