London Barrage Balloons
1939-40, a file of correspondence Sir William Davidson, M.P. relating to the London Balloon Barrage Section of the Royal Air Force fixing a balloon in Ladbroke Square Garden. A detailed compilation with top copies and duplicates, some signed, and includes problems associated with the removal of trees (instead of just lopping), claims for compensation for damage to property, the keeping of chickens for the unit. A wonderful insight into the problems on the ground of setting up these defensive units. Apparently this Garden was considered by the locals as a particularly poor choice as it was well wooded, not apparent from a scan of an Ordnance Survey map
