provenance
E Wertheimer, Glendining, 24 January 1945, lot 150, £105
Though the Act of Union took effect on 1 May 1707, the Treaty of Union had been agreed by both Scottish and English Parliaments some months before, and was ratified by the Scottish Parliament on 16 January 1707 n.s. (1706 o.s.) This accounts for the appearence of these Five-Guinea pieces dated 1706, indicating that they were struck before 25 March 1707 n.s. (1706 o.s.), and with anno regni qvinto, indicating that the coins were struck before 7 March 1707 n.s. (1706 o.s.).
