Charles I (1625-49), Pontefract besieged June 1648 - March 1649, octagonal Shilling, struck in the name of Charles II and from the same dies as the gold Unite, 4.62g, 1648, dvm: spiro: spero., large crown over c-r, beaded outer border and wire line inner border both sides, rev. carolvs: secvndvs: 1648, castle gateway with central tower dividing p-c, obs at left, cannon protruding at right (Nelson p.36, type I; N.2648; S.3150), slight surface cracks on the obverse, deeply toned and almost extremely fine
