Charles I (1625-49), Pontefract besieged June 1648 - March 1649, lozenge shaped Two-Shillings, 9.64g, 1648, dvm: spiro: spero., sketchy 'beaded' outer border and wire line inner border, large, simple but neat crown over c.r, rev. sketchy 'beaded' outer border and no inner border, castle gateway with central tower dividing p-c, obs at left, hand holding sword at right, date below (Nelson p.33, fig.43; N.2645; S.3147), lightly double struck on date, otherwise almost extremely fine, toned and crisp, a most impressive example of this rare denomination

Duke of Devonshire, Christie, 26-30 March 1844, the Pontefract pieces were offered in lots 466-470. In the Spink library copy of the Devonshire catalogue, lot 467, which contained two coins, one round and one lozenge, was sold to Bergne.
