1938 (6 Oct.) attempted long distance record flight from Dundee to Cape Town by the Short "Mayo" composite: long "The Union of South Africa." envelope to Cape Town, franked G.B. 1½d. uncancelled pair, owing to the two aircraft having a minor collision they landed in the estuary of the Orange River about 400 miles from Cape Town, the reverse signed by the pilot D. Bennett and endorsed "Mercury" Scotland to South Africa 6th-8th Oct. 1938"; the envelope a little roughly opened and with some tears at top, otherwise fine and extremely rare. Photo
