1840 (6 May) entire letter from Halifax to Preston with fine red "Pd1" on the front and good blue "halifax/my 6/1840" c.d.s. on the reverse, opening well for display; filing folds affecting both handstamps. Fine. An interesting entire letter used on the first day of official use of the Penny Black stamp, the contents acknowledge the receipt of one half of a thousand Pounds Bank of England note. Photo
