1860 Printed in the Colony from the Perkins, Bacon Plates
Original Proof Sheets
2d. in black on bluish paper, a complete sheet of 120, some faults though a remarkable and highly important item of Western Australia philately. Unique. Photo
Note: This early proof sheet shows only the [111] and [114] double entries of the five which occur on all the sheets of the issued stamps. On the sheet [8/18], [10/20], [32/42] and [77/87] pairs have been officially marked with pen marks to indicate faulty alignment. In the issued sheet [10] and [42] have been re-transferred more to the right and [87] more to the left. In [10] and [42] marks of the first entry appear in the right margin. In [8/18] faulty alignment has not been corrected and no signs of double entry appear. Thus [10], [42] and [87] double entries can be attributed to re-transfers made before issue, probably to facilitate correct perforation of the sheets.
This sheet was found in 1935 in the effects of a one-time Postmaster-General of Western Australia.
