1854 (19 Sept.) envelope to Brighton, marked "Overland Mail", rated "2/3", bearing 1d. strip of four with margins close or touched in places, each cancelled "1", showing Perth boxed d.s. and "general post office/Crown/perth/western australia" oval h.s. in red with, on reverse, London (28.11) and arrival datestamps. A rare franking with the stamps used within seven weeks of issue. One of the finest "Black Swan" penny covers extant. B.P.A. Certificate (1981). Photo

Note: The stamps prepaid the Western Australia external ship letter rate; the United Kingdom collected 1/- for a letter over ½oz. but under 1oz. and 1/3d. for the French "via Marseilles" transit at 5d. per ¼oz., i.e. for a letter between ½oz. and ¾ oz.
