Wreck Mail
A selection of covers with 1940 (23 Jan.) sinking of the S.S. 'Vidar', window envelope from Manchester showing "Beskadiget af Søvand" in violet (35 to 50 known); 1941 (13 Jan.) sinking of S.S. 'Alhena' envelope from Bedford to Aden showing, on reverse, boxed "damaged by sea/water" type 4 cachet in black; 1941-42 large commercial envelope from London to Singapore with boxed "damaged by sea water" and "no service/return to sender" both in violet, the envelope suffering by immersion in water and any clue to the date can only be gathered by the transfer of printing on the inside, where invoices dated July 1941 can be identified (little is known about these elusive mails which were either off loaded in South Africa or an Indian port); 1945 (30 Apr.) S.S. 'Scythia' envelope from Preston, Ontario to London with the type 1 cachet; 1945 (24 Oct.) envelope from Gilbert & Ellice Islands to Cheshire showing "damaged by/water", and 1952 (14 Dec.) envelope from U.S.A. to Kent with a fair strike of "damaged by sea-water/not to be surcharged" in red. A useful group. (6 covers)
