Sextus Pompey, AR Denarius, Sicily, 42-40 BC, the Pharos of Messana surmounted by statue of Neptune, galley with legionary eagle and sceptre at base, MAG PIVS IMP IT[ER], rev. Scylla wielding rudder above head, traces of PRAEF CLAS ET ORAE MARIT EX S C (RRC 511/4; Sydenham 1348; Sear, Imperators, 335), together with another, bare head of Pompey the Great right, lituus before, rev. Neptune standing left, foot on prow and holding aplustre between the Catanaean brothers running in opposite directions, each carrying a parent on their shoulders, similar legend (RRC 511/3a; Sydenham 1344; Sear, Imperators, 334), the latter tooled in places, and possibly removed from jewellery, good fine or better (2)
