Scotland, Mary (1542-67), Testoon, 6.00g, Third period 1560-65, first widowhood, 1561, maria dei gra scotorvm regina, bust left in French bonnet and high-necked dress, date in decorated cartouche below, legend begins at 7 o'clock, rev. · + · salvvm · popvlvm · tvvm · domine, crowned shield flanked by crowned ms (Burns 1, fig.896; S.5422), struck on a small, thick, flan but full weight for this, scratch in field behind bust and some contact marks, general light wear, a very respectable example of this with the portrait well preserved, date legible though partially off-flan, a robust example, very fine, the portrait issues of Mary Queen of Scots much in demand and very rare
