Scotland, David II (1329-71), Farthing, 0.32g, First coinage, first issue, +moneta:regis:d:, crowned bust left, sceptre before, rev. +avid scottor, cross pattée, mullets of five points in three quarters and star of five points in the second quarter? (S.5084 var.), a field find with earthy deposit in recesses, very small striking split at one o'clock which turns into delamination along length of long cross, struck on a broad flan for this denomination with the obverse appearing full and pleasingly round, the portrait particularly well defined, very fine and possibly a new variety of reverse die with the star in second quarter

It is difficult to ascertain if the reverse star was punched into the die or if it is a mullet in-filled with excess metal. Close inspection reveals some die clogging around the initial cross but none in the field of the relevant quarter. The surface of the star appears smooth as if deliberate but this may be a result of wear through circulation. If deliberate this privy mark is without precedence and would be a new variety of first coinage farthing
