Henry VIII (1509-47), Groat, 2.71g, Second coinage, 1526-44, York under Archbishop Thomas Wolsey, 1526-30, m.m. voided cross, crowned bust right, franc, rev. civitas eboraci, long cross fourchée over shield, t-w at sides, Cardinal's hat below, nothing in forks (Laker p.10-12; N.1799; S.2339), an old field find, flan not fully rounded, scuffs to bust and with patches of weakness, however, extensive sharpness does remain and this portrait certainly pleasing, has toned over time, overall a solid nearly very fine, a most unusual obverse die and this reverse rare with nothing in cross ends

In the process of sinking the obverse die the face punch has been placed approximately 1 millimetre above the drapery punch. There is a conspicuous gap to be seen between the two constituent parts of the King's bust resulting in the effect of seeming disjointed. This is a rare insight into and reminder of the process by which the dies are produced and illustrates well how seemingly uniform designs may in fact be composed of distinct punches.
