Wessex, Ecgberht (802-39), Penny, 1.27g, Dorob C Phase, c.828-39, Canterbury, Diormod, draped and diademed bust right breaking legend and inner circle, +ecgbea / rht re, a inverted, rev. +diormod mnet, ne ligate, around plain inner circle, Dorob C monogram within (Naismith C82; N.573; S.1035), a field find, with a coarse layer of patination through soil action and light curvature to flan, however, this piece free of cracks or chips and with all details well discernible, the underlying piece essentially very fine or better

Such northerly findspots for coins of Ecgberht of Wessex are uncommon. However, it is documented that a battle took place at Caistor between Ecgberht and Wiglaf, King of Mercia in 827. Ecgberht prevailed as victor and allowed Wiglaf to reascend his throne after paying homage to the Wessexian king. It is tempting to speculate that this piece found its way to Caistor in the pocket of one of Ecgberht's retainers.
