Lot: 544

Edward the Confessor (1042-66), Penny, 1.10g, small flan type, Norwich, Thorfrithr, diademed bust left of local style, rev. +ÐvrferÐ on no:, voided short cross (Freeman 144, p.241; N.818; S.1175), a superb, lustrous, example, pleasantly toned and with pleasing, smooth surfaces, the bust on this with an endearing local style, extremely fine and extremely rare

There are just five recorded Norwich mint Small flan type pennies. The first example, in the British Museum collection, is given to moneyer Leofwic in BMC. Freeman, lists this example under both Leofwig and Leofwine as the BMC attribution is tentative. In the Eaglen collection, sold through Baldwins in 1998, a further example of this tentative moneyer appeared (lot 1495). A further two examples of the moneyer Thorfrithr are known in museum collections (SCBI 18 Copenhagen, no 1143 and SCBI 26 East Anglia, No 1289). The latter example was purchased by Norwich Castle Museum from Seaby in 1927. The current piece is, therefore, only the second Small flan type penny of Norwich in private hands and certainly the finest.
