Auction: 15004 - Ancient, British and Foreign Coins and Commemorative Medals
Lot: 542

Cnut (1016-35), Penny, 1.14g, Scandinavian imitation of the Short cross type, Norwich, Manna, stylised diademed bust left, sceptre before, rev. +mana on onrÐp, voided short cross arms extending from central annulet, the initial cross misaligned with field design (SCBI 15 Copenhagen, No 3202 - same dies; for English type imitated c.f. N.790; S.1159), struck on a lightly crimped flan, deeply toned and with good surfaces, mostly struck-up and the bust a pleasing Scandinavain style, good very fine or better, an ineresting piece

There is very little to add to the footnote for lot 1416 in CNG Auction 96, 14th May 2014. The aforementioned piece is a die duplicate of the current and, due to the same dark tone, is likely to have come from the same source. Whereabouts these particular imitations were produced is not known but a Scandinavian origin is almost certain
