Mercia, Cynethryth, wife of Offa, portrait Penny, 1.13g, light coinage, c.770-92, Canterbury, Eoba, uncial letter m, contraction bar above, all within double inner circle, the outer pelleted, +cfneÐrfÐregina, rev. eoba before draped bust right based on a Roman prototype, cross with pellets in angles and trefoil behind (Chick 138c - this coin; Blunt 117; N.339; S.910), a detector find and appearing as such, the surfaces porous and with pitting in areas, however, the flan is uncracked and full, this piece is essentially very fine and by all intents a good representative specimen of this extremely rare and nationally significant portrait issue of Queen Cynethryth
