Anglo-Saxon, Northumbria, Ultra-Crondall types, c.620-c.65, Thrymsa, 1.27g, 'York' type, c.640-60, facing figure flanked by crosses, the drapery consisting of intersecting lines rev. sancte saactef? retrograde around inner circle, a cross within, first s composite and first e prostrate (Metcalf p.49-51; SCBI 63 BM, No 16; Sutherland No 75, Pl. IV, 18-20; N.27; S.762), small area of weakness to right of bust and on flanking cross, reverse off-struck and with small area of weakness, mostly well struck with minor mud? deposits in recesses, a most presentable piece, good very fine and extremely rare
This specimen, having remained in the same collection for at least the last 20 years, appears to be previously unrecorded. Hitherto13 examples are known making this piece number 14. From the designated sub-types of which this is type C, here we have the ninth example to add to the corpus. In addition, it has been claimed that all the known reverses of type C have blundered legends. The cataloguer, however, has been able to discern the word SANCTE in retrograde. It is also possible that a slightly blundered version of the same latin rendering of the word 'saint' follows on from this; SAACTE.
